How to Prepare Your Premises for a PAT Test

Preparation is the difference between an engineer working steadily through your building and one waiting for someone to find a key. Neither of us wants the second.

Before the day

  1. Count properly. Walk the building and include extension leads, IEC leads and chargers — not just the obvious appliances. Under-counting is the single most common cause of a visit running over.
  2. Tell us about access. Locked cupboards, server rooms, cellars, alarm codes, sign-in procedures and anywhere needing an escort.
  3. Flag anything that cannot be powered down. Servers, tills, medical or refrigeration equipment. There is almost always a way to work around it, but only if we know beforehand.
  4. Nominate a contact who can open doors and answer questions.
  5. Find your last report. Previous asset IDs let us match items to existing records instead of starting a new register.

On the morning

  • Clear access to sockets. The commonest delay is a desk that has to be moved to reach the plug behind it.
  • Unplug and gather portable items where practical — chargers, kettles, fans, desk lamps in one place is far quicker than hunting for them.
  • Empty the kettle and let hot equipment cool. Fryers and hot cabinets cannot be tested while hot.
  • Tell staff it is happening. A one-line email prevents the “why is my monitor off?” conversation twelve times.
  • Save your work. Testing means briefly powering things down.

What will slow things down

  • Equipment in locked rooms nobody can open
  • Appliances buried behind furniture or stock
  • No one on site who can authorise a power-down
  • An appliance count that turns out to be half the real number
  • Staff who have not been told, and object to their equipment being touched

What we bring

Calibrated test equipment, labels, and the consumables for minor remedials such as fuse changes and plug re-terminations. You do not need to provide anything beyond access and a contact.

Afterwards

Your certificate and asset register normally arrive by email the same working day. Check the failed items, action them, and file the certificate with your EICR and other compliance records. We will contact you before the next test falls due.

Book a visit and we will confirm access arrangements when we schedule it.
